The function of the diesel fuel system is to inject a precise amount of atomized and pressurized fuel into each engine cylinder at the proper time. Combustion in a diesel engine occurs when this rush of fuel is mixed with hot compressed air. No electrical spark is used as in a gasoline engine.

There are many different types and shapes of fuel tanks. Each size and shape is designed for a specific purpose. The fuel tank must be capable of storing enough fuel to operate the engine for a reasonable length of time. The tank must be closed to prevent contamination by foreign objects. It must also be vented to allow air to enter, replacing any fuel demanded by the engine.

Three other tank openings are required--one to fill, one to discharge, and one to drain. There are three types of diesel fuel lines. These include heavyweight lines for the high pressures found between the injection pump and the injectors, medium weight lines for the light or medium fuel pressures found between the fuel tank and injection pump, and lightweight lines where there is little or no pressure.

Diesel fuel must be filtered not once, but several times in most systems. A typical system might have three stages of progressive filters--a filter screen at the tank or transfer pump, a primary fuel filter, and a secondary fuel filter.

In series filters, all the fuel goes through one filter and then through the other. In parallel filters, part of the fuel goes through each filter. For more information on fuel filters, see Diesel Fuel Filter Basics. Simple fuel systems use gravity or air pressure to get fuel from the tank to the injection pump. On modern high speed diesel engines, a fuel transfer pump is normally used. This pump, driven by the engine, supplies fuel automatically to the diesel injection system.

The pump often has a hand primer lever for bleeding air from the system. Modern injection pumps are almost all jerk pumps which use the plunger and cam method of fuel injection. Keeping your fuel system properly maintained by changing the fuel filter prolongs the life of the fuel pump. Dirt in the fuel is captured by the filter which clogs over time, causing it to operate less efficiently. The clogged filter reduces fuel pressure and volume in the fuel system. If your vehicle is losing power, it could be a sign of a clogged fuel filter.

Note: This guide applies to gasoline engine vehicles only. The fuel filters in diesel cars and trucks are usually much larger, and the whole fuel system is much more complex. Diesel engine fuel systems are also under a lot more pressure, with modern common rail systems producing over bar of pressure. Accidentally releasing such high pressure could result in injury. Next, slide the fuel lines away from the filter so you can take them off the nozzles on either end. You can then slide the old fuel filter out of its bracket. To put a new fuel filter in, just slide it into the bracket, reattach the fuel lines, and replace the plastic clips holding the filter in position. Did this summary help you? Because a fuel filter performs such an important function, it is essential to understand how it works, when to tell if it is faulty, and how to obtain the right one for your vehicle. That is the reason we came up with this fuel filter guide.

Reading it will help you ensure optimal performance of the engine as well as prevent damage to its parts. Read chapter by chapter, and learn more about this crucial part of an automotive fuel system. The guide focuses on the type of fuel filter used on road vehicles, which in some ways, is different from that of other fuel systems. Chapter 1: Fuel Filter Definition. Iceman Member. My fuel filter base started to leaking the other day, and it is making it hard to start. Have to bleed it now to start everytime. I could only find the stanadyne part number for the heater O-ring: part nsn couldn't crossreference the other numbers to the GM part numbers.

The fact is that a certain amount of dirt in an air filter actually increases its filtering efficiency by reducing the size of the holes in the filter media which helps stop smaller dirt particles.

This means that instead of a maximum life of 6, miles, the typical air filter may actually last anywhere from 60, tomiles!

Air filter restriction is not time or miles dependent.

Mileage of as much asto as little as 5, miles have been reported when restriction is reached. It is important to know the highest full load restriction that occurred during the vehicle operation in order to service BEFORE the redline. After an element has reached its redline value, it only takes a little more contaminant before high fuel consumption and poor engine operation occurs.

The Air Line Filter and Indicator ALFI protects against harmful debris and contaminants in high pressure air lines in a wide variety of industrial, transportation and on-site applications requiring compressed air or gas. Extreme clogging will extend the red indicator as device progresses towards full bypass mode until it is fully extended, locked, and requires replacement.

Build-up of debris will open the bypass to keep air flowing. When restriction becomes excessive, a bright red indicator deploys from the device, indicating it is time to change the filter.

Sometimes I would kill for a Holley carb and a mechanical fuel pump.

Security Check

So the check engine light is turning on and off randomly. I pay no attention. Truck runs great. Happy happy joy joy.

This is going to go over well. Anyway, after a fairly long wait for the tow truck, because they themselves broke down, the Suburban was finally back in the driveway at Casa de Reynolds and I was hoping it was something simple. I tried everything there was to test, thanks to the great instructional videos that Airtex has on their website FuelPumpU. Damn it man! After talking to the guys at Airtex, and utilizing their tech support like I was the one paying them, I finally had to cave in as I realized that the only thing that was going to fix this was a pair of new fuel pumps.

The Airtex pumps showed up all wrapped nice and ready to be installed, with one exception. All the Airtex pumps come with new pigtails, with connectors and everything, if your car or truck may be one that needs a replacement.

Did I mention that the Suburban stopped running, when the fuel pumps both quit, after having filled it to the brim with gas? In truth I had burned around 3 gallons since filling up, but that still meant jillions of gallons of gas in the two tanks. Fun and excitement! To fully understand the job at hand, you need to understand the layout of the fuel system on the Suburban.

The rear tank looks easy to pull out, and in truth it is, except for the fuel fittings that attach to the pump in a spot where no human hands can reach. Remember, the chassis on these trucks are assemble upside down before the body is ever mated to them, so all of this stuff is easy during assembly. Not so much on disassembly. I had to buy two sets of fuel line tools before I had ones good enough to disconnect the lines that had been on there for nearlymiles.

Buy the good ones to start with. Several emissions components under the truck had to be disconnected, along with three fuel lines on the pump, and of course the wiring connector. Again, this tank is holding somewhere around 25 gallons of fuel at this point. No bueno. Like any good hot rodder, I used a floor jack, a piece of plywood, and all the profanity available to me in order to remove it, but I got it out.

Once it was out, the rest is a breeze. I needed to drive this truck the next morning out to the desert for some off road truck testing, and would have had to buy gas cans up the wazoo just to hold the fuel that was in them.

If they had not been full, I would have done these things. Sorry guys. Removing the pumps from the tanks is just like any other fuel tank on your hot rod.
